Ed Brubaker’s Incognito
I just finished issue 5 of Ed Brubaker’s and Sean Phillips’ Incognito. What a blast with its crime noir qualities and pulp sci-fi sensibility. Phillip’s art style is perfect. And the character twist at the end of issue five, wow. This title is becoming one of my favorites.
Of course I know the honeymoon is over in terms of wanting more, more, more, NOW since I got to burn through five issues with no wait. Now I’m stuck with everyone else to see what happens with Ava Destruction (what an awesomely original femme fatale) and Zack. Luckily, I am getting to “discover” so much so quickly after years of slacking in my book purchases.
For example, I am just now getting into Brubaker’s and Phillips’ equally intriguing Criminal with the first collected trade, Coward. Understand, there is no surprise about my liking Brubaker. I liked him when I read the Vertigo imprint short “Prez, smells like Teen President.” More importantly I enjoyed his run on Catwoman, where he brought about more than just a costume change to the character.
I’ve always been a fan of the down-trodden, beat-up styles like the characters written by the likes of Raymond Chandler, Phillip K Dick, and Dashiell Hammet. I definitely think Brubaker is in that vein and would make them proud.
