Comic book quote of the day
One of the most mindbendingly enjoyable reads within the last ten years for me was Promethea by Alan Moore and illustrated by J.H.Williams III. Simplified, the heroine is an amalgam of superhero archtypes such as Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel (with obvious hints toward Moore’s take, Marvelman). In her alter ego she is a young girl named Sophie Bangs who transforms into Promethea, a strong female character, through her imagination that taps into an otherworldly mystical force in the “Immateria.”
As Moore’s series progresses Promethea becomes a meditation on the occult and spirituality, a neat little feat I think that is often undervalued in comparison to his often more accessible America’s Best titles like Tom Strong. Sophie is led by past incarnations of Promethea along a Kabbalistic path that ends with an apocalypse. And that apocalypse is actually viewed in a positive light.
A single quote best summarizes the title character:
Yeah, some pretty heady stuff that at times borders on the absurd, but a throughly challenging and enjoyable read over-all. This of course is all helped tremendously by William’s illustrations. There is this one two page splash panel I can’t do justice in even describing in which Sophie and another Promethea incarnation walk an infinite loop while talking. Crazy, crazy stuff that made me laugh at its creativity.
