Once again, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing I would recommend going to Boston.com’s The Big Picture and scrolling through the photo gallery show honoring the occasion that was produced last week.

For a major newspaper website to come up with something like this is awesome and shows what that medium can do, visually, if newspaper staffs applies themselves and its area of expertise intelligently on the web. I bet if Boston.com were to even solicit donations to keep the site alive they would get it.

Funny thing is it took a web developer, Alan Taylor, to launch the idea that’s become widely popular. And though it looks simple enough I can’t imagine the amount of time it takes for him to scour the web, pick topics and pictures, and thread them all together for each post. Great, great stuff that definitely reflects an art on many, many levels, so don’t stop at the Apollo gallery while there. Check out Alan’s other pictorial essays.

Put sibling on phone plan so she too could have much iPhone love. Her envy was too much.

Went to gym. Ran 7 mph for 20 minutes on treadmill non-stop. Did three types of ab exercises. Am getting buff. Well, at least in better shape.

Went to grocery store. Bought groceries. Splurged on fresh blueberries. Love blueberries.

Went to Target and bought Roman blinds. Wondered what made them Roman in isle. Made by gladiators perhaps?

Visited comic book store. Rarely do this. Am sort of poor. Usually request bound volumes at local library, then check out. Figure a few young nerds are also getting the bug out of the deal. Helping artists the best way possible, for the moment.

Bought:

Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead vol. 6

Issue 62 of The Walking Dead

Detective Comics 854

Unknown Soldier, Issue 9

Digging Batwoman, beyond the saucy remarks. Loved J.H. Williams work since his collaboration with James Robinson on Starman. (kind of stoked about the Omnibus still needing to purchase. Starman was a fan fave between fellow geeks during college.) Kane is a cool heroine, well written and smart.

As discussed with comic store guy behind the counter, The Walking Dead is one of the best comics going right now. Just hoping to catch up now through volumes if wallet will hold out.

There were books that will need to be picked up later. Ed Brubaker’s Captain American: Reborn. Some Ellis stuff. And more Queen and Country.

Surely this list will grow. May the library help.

Sometimes what goes without saying must be said. Been following Neil Gaiman on Twitter. His short missives are reminders as to why he’s such an inspiration. He’s brilliant, funny, and inclusive to his fans. His invites to fans to get input is heartening. He has a very attractive girlfriend as well (Amanda Palmer = wow). Sounds odd for a guy to gush so much whose closest brush with Gaiman was with a girl in college who knew him.( An aside: thought she was full of it. She was not. Saddened by disbelief afterward. Young and dumb and . . . anyway.)

First Gaiman story read was a short Sandman piece about an aspiring playwright.

Sometimes in your dreams you fall

And sometimes in your dreams when you fall you die

But sometimes in your dreams when you fall you fly.

Or something there approximately. Never read a comic like it. Never truly read one as fundamentally moving since.

Not sure what brought this sentimental jaunt up, beyond a yearning for change and its been awhile since a really good and motivating dream.

Anyway, still not too bad of a way to end a day.

Woke at 8 a.m. Ate bowl of Fiber One cereal. Napped with 9 month old nephew from 9-10:30. Sat nephew in front of television to watch Yo Gabba Gabba for appropriate developmental brain rot. Began catching up on tagged and bookmarked stuff. Stomach is now doing not nice things because of high fiber intake.

In the meanwhile, enjoying Bleeding Cool, a nifty little comic book industry website. Warren Ellis writes a great little column. Enjoyed his stuff since Transmetropolitan. He still is Spider Jerusalem.

Also read this marketing column at KK. Sort of sad. Want to be fan number one? Author must write something worth reading. Shrug.

Oh, must also pick up a reprint of Detective Comics intro of Batwoman. Great comic super-heroine described as a ginger haired hot lesbian in latex. And written by Rucka? Sold.

Still no word on job. Will serve coffee to author/writer/creative type for a pittance.
